Salt Lake City, June 18, 2000 – The CSAN Women’s Amateur State Select Soccer Team won the championship title in the Region IV US Amateur Soccer Association (USASA) Select Team Tournament in Salt Lake City this weekend. This annual four-day tournament is where the men’s and women’s regional teams are chosen in preparation for the USASA national tournament in August, called the U.S. Soccer Festival. The U.S. Soccer Festival is used to choose players for the U.S. National Men's Amateur Soccer Team.
The Northern California women's team will also play in the George F. Donnelly National Cup Tournament in Fort Lauderdale over Thanksgiving. In addition, seven women were selected for the Region IV women's select team pool.
The results for the Northern California Women’s Select Team were:
- Northern California vs. Arizona 11:1
- Northern California vs. Colorado 5:0
- Northern California vs. Washington 2:0
- Northern California vs. Oregon (semi-final) 5:2
- Northern California vs. Utah (final) 1:1 at regular time, 4:2 on PK’s
In the Arizona game Emily Burt, Stacy Duncan and Kyla Sabo scored three goals apiece. Emily Burt led the team’s goal scoring with six goals for the tournament. The attacking depth of the Northern California team was shown by the fact that ten of the 18 players scored goals during the tournament.
The Northern California women also faced opponents in the semi-final and final games that had played one less game in the preliminary round of the tournament. Northern California Women’s Team coach Rick Caldwell said, “ The tournament demonstrated Northern California’s depth of goal scoring ability, courage and determination. We played one more bracket game than Oregon or Utah. The championship was won with talent and heart.”
Nine of the players on the Northern California women’s team are from the Sacramento Valley Women’s Soccer League, eight from the Women’s Premier Soccer League and one from the Golden Gate Soccer League.
The head coach of the CSAN women’s team is Rick Caldwell, Technical Director, Sacramento United Soccer Club. Jennifer Thomas, Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach, UC Berkeley, assisted him. The members of the 2000 CSAN Women’s Amateur Select Soccer Team were: Holly Azevedo, Lakeysia Beene, Nicole Burnside, Emily Burt, Kelsey Carlson, Stacy Duncan, Collette Hanlon, Megan Horvath, Brittany Kirk, Angie Diaz, Carmel Murphy, Keri Raygor-Sanchez, Melissa Ribaudo, Kyla Sabo, Laura Schott, Kim Stocklmeir, Callie Withers and Maite Zabala.
Selected for the Region IV Women’s Select Team player pool were Beene, Burt, Carlson, Duncan, Horvath, Kirk, Murphy, Schott, Stocklmeir, Withers and Zabala.
